Why is X Dangerous for Democracy?
X (formerly Twitter) poses a risk to individuals and society for at least three reasons:
- X amplifies hostility in user interactions. By design, X’s recommendation algorithms lead to social fragmentation and are likely to harm the mental health of its users.
- X allows hate speech and opinion manipulation campaigns to proliferate due to a lack of moderation.
- Centralized, X gives all power to Elon Musk, who leverages it to serve his political agenda and is not afraid to censor accounts and content that he disapproves of.
